Nor have I grown up in Pittsburgh.

I didn’t have the privilege of seeing Mario play for most of his career.

I have no family that are Penguins fans.

I really have no right to be a Penguins fan, at all.

Yet, here I am.

I had to teach myself the ins and outs hockey.

I watch…

I get called a bandwagoner by some people because I became a Pens fan in the 2007-2008 season. They don’t touch the fact that even after we LOST the cup, I stayed a fan.

No one was a Pens fan in my family either. I have since converted my dad, sister, and husband into huge fans. I became a fan because of my friend Kellie, who forced me to go to Primantis with her to watch some games and eat dollar pizza. The atmosphere there was unreal, and I got hooked.

I, too, had to learn the game myself. Kellie wasn’t a very good teacher (lol). By the middle of the 08-09 season, I knew everything there was to know. Anytime we’re out and someone asks my husband something hockey related, he refers them to me. I love it.

The first time I saw Mario and the other greats play was at the alumni game New Years Eve. The first game I ever attended was last season. I have been to 4 since then, including sitting outside during the last game ever at the Mellon, and the first regular season game at the CEC.

My first jersey was Crosby. He is ONE of my favorite players. People often confuse me for a puckbunny when I wear his jersey, but then do a double take when I tell them Godard is my FAVORITE player, and even more so when I wear my Godard jersey.

New fans, and those who are not from Pittsburgh, should never be judged. But as much as the organization and its fans are like a big family, they’re sometimes a dysfunctional one when it comes to acceptance of some people (players and fans alike).

I am a die hard Pens fan. And I will always be. Like the Pens tattoo on my right arm, my fandom is permanent.
